Kahului

Kahului is Maui’s commercial hub, home to Kahului Airport, Kahului Harbor and the island’s main shopping centers. Most of its housing is single-family.

About Kahului

Kahului’s housing includes the postwar "Dream City" subdivisions built by Alexander & Baldwin and the newer Maui Lani master-planned community. Condos are few, mostly older buildings and newer townhome projects.

Single-family monthly medians this year ran from about $875,000 to $1.2 million, among the lowest on the island. Kahului condo prices are the lowest on Maui, so check whether a unit is fee simple or leasehold before you compare it with others.

Can you rent to visitors?

HousesPermit required, capped at 6Outside resort and apartment districts, Maui County allows visitor rentals of a house only with a short-term rental home permit, and caps those permits by community plan area. The Wailuku-Kahului area is capped at 6. The owner must have owned the home for at least 15 years, the home must be at least 15 years old, and permits don’t transfer when a home sells. A buyer can’t plan on renting a house here to visitors.
