Can you rent to visitors?

HousesPermit required, capped at 48Outside resort and apartment districts, Maui County allows visitor rentals of a house only with a short-term rental home permit, and caps those permits by community plan area. The Paia-Haiku area is capped at 48. The owner must have owned the home for at least 15 years, the home must be at least 15 years old, and permits don’t transfer when a home sells. A buyer can’t plan on renting a house here to visitors.

Land, title and what to check

Haiku is in the county’s Upcountry water service area, and many rural lots rely on catchment. Check the water source and the county meter waiting list before you buy.

Most of Haiku is in the agricultural district, so county rules on farm dwellings and agricultural use apply.

Hazards, water and access

Access to much of Haiku and Huelo is by the Hana Highway and narrow side roads.
