I Used to Be a Little Scared of Retirement. Not Anymore.
As I prepare to retire from my role as editor and executive publisher of Hawaii Business Magazine, I find myself reflecting on the journey that has brought me to this moment. It’s a moment that I thought would fill me with anxiety, but instead, it’s filled me with excitement and a sense of freedom.
For years, I’ve been driven by the need to provide for my family and achieve success in my career. And while those goals were important, they left me little time to enjoy the very paradise we call home. The islands of Hawaii are a cost to live in, and many have left in search of more affordable living arrangements. But my wife and I have been fortunate enough to make it work, sacrificing our time to ensure our daughters have a better life.
Telling Legacy Stories
One of the things I’ve always loved about my job is the chance to tell stories that need to be told. And now, I’m excited to take that passion to the next level by starting my own one-man company. I’ll be writing about almost anything that interests me, but I’m particularly excited to focus on legacy stories – the stories of your parents or grandparents, your company, or even your own life story.
As someone who has spent years researching and writing about entrepreneurs, I’m now excited to become one myself, albeit part-time. I’ll be writing about a wide range of topics, from the experiences of my parents growing up in Poland during World War II to the story of how my wife and I made Hawaii our home.
Find Your Passion
As you read this, you may be thinking about your own retirement plans. You may be worried about what comes next or how you’ll fill your days. My advice is to find your passion. What have you always wanted to do but never had the time? What are you excited to explore? For me, it’s writing, photography, hiking, and volunteering. And for you, it may be something completely different.
But here’s the thing – we don’t have to abandon our passions just because we retire. In fact, we have the opportunity to pursue them in ways that we couldn’t before. We can take our time, enjoy the journey, and savor the moments that make life worth living.
Retirement: A New Chapter
As I leave behind my role at Hawaii Business Magazine, I’m excited to start this new chapter of my life. I’m excited to spend more time with my family, to travel, to explore new hobbies, and to pursue my passions. And I’m excited to share my experiences with you, in the hope that they may inspire you to take a closer look at what retirement means for you.
Retirement is often seen as the end of one chapter and the beginning of another. But I believe it’s more than that. It’s an opportunity to redefine what success means, to pursue our passions, and to enjoy the fruits of our labor.
So, as I prepare to retire and start this new chapter of my life, I’m filled with gratitude and excitement. I’m excited to share my story with you and to learn from yours. And I’m excited to explore the possibilities that retirement brings.
