Aloha Friday Photo: Ali’iolani Hale and the King Kamehameha Statue in Honolulu

As we welcome the weekend, we’re taking a moment to appreciate the beauty and history of Honolulu. In this week’s Aloha Friday Photo, we’re sharing a stunning shot of two iconic landmarks that are deeply rooted in Hawaiian culture and history: Ali’iolani Hale and the King Kamehameha Statue.

Ali’iolani Hale, also known as the Old Supreme Court Building, is an impressive structure that has been a part of Honolulu’s skyline for over 140 years. Commissioned by King Kamehameha V, the great-grandson of King Kamehameha the Great, the building was originally designed to be a palace but was later dedicated as a government building. Today, it serves as the home of the Hawaii State Supreme Court.

The building is a perfect complement to the King Kamehameha Statue, which is one of the most iconic statues in the world. King Kamehameha I, also known as King Kamehameha the Great, was a great warrior, diplomat, and leader who united the Hawaiian Islands into one royal kingdom in 1810. His legacy continues to be celebrated today, and his statue is a symbol of the rich history and culture of our state.

In fact, King Kamehameha Day is a statewide holiday that is officially recognized on June 11th. However, the celebrations don’t stop there. Festivities will span over a couple of weeks across the Hawaiian Islands, and you can expect to see parades and floral lei draping on King Kamehameha statues. If you’re visiting this spot next Friday, be sure to check out the statue, which is typically adorned with long lei-draped on its outstretched arms.

If you’re a fan of the popular TV show Hawaii Five-0, you may recognize this iconic spot. In the show, Ali’iolani Hale served as the headquarters for Steve McGarrett, Danno, and the other crime-fighting detectives of the Five-0 team.

As we celebrate the beauty and history of these two landmarks, we’re reminded of the importance of preserving our cultural heritage and sharing it with the world. Whether you’re a local or a visitor, there’s no denying the magic of Honolulu’s cityscape, and Ali’iolani Hale and the King Kamehameha Statue are just two of the many treasures that make our city so special.

So, what’s your favorite thing to do on a Friday afternoon in Honolulu? Do you have a favorite spot to grab lunch or take a stroll? Share your thoughts and tips with us in the comments below!
