Inspiring Transformation Through Art and Imagination

In a world filled with uncertainty and challenges, it’s more important than ever to provide our youth with the tools and resources they need to thrive. One innovative approach that is making a real difference is the use of creativity as a catalyst for change. A recently launched art residency at the RYSE Hawai’i shelter in Kailua is a perfect example of how creativity can be harnessed to empower young people and help them overcome adversity.

The Power of Art as a Tool for Change

Fatiha Kheddaoui, a teaching artist from France with a wealth of experience in various mediums, was brought on board to lead the art residency at RYSE Hawai’i. Her approach was unique – she didn’t want to simply teach art techniques, but rather use art as a tool to connect with the young people and help them express themselves in a meaningful way.

“As an artist, I’ve always believed that art should be a conversation,” Fatiha explained. “I don’t like making art alone; I’m much more interested in having someone sit down with me, start creating, and suddenly I’m learning so much about their creativity and who they are.”

Breaking Down Barriers through Art

One of the most powerful aspects of Fatiha’s art residency was the way it allowed the young people to break down barriers and open up about their challenges and struggles. Fatiha asked them to take a basic backpack and add to it using whatever art supplies they wanted – whether paint, stitching, or appliqué – to tell a story about themselves and their lives.

“It was amazing to see them progress,” Fatiha said. “At first, they started with what they thought would be ‘cute’ or ‘nice,’ but as we built trust with them, they began to open up and incorporate more of the realities from their lives, the challenges they’re facing. It was truly remarkable to see.”

Unlocking Creativity and Building Confidence

The impact of Fatiha’s art residency was not limited to the individuals who participated. It also had a ripple effect, benefiting the entire community. Carla Houser, executive director at RYSE, noted that the art workshops provided a much-needed space for the young people to imagine, reflect, and create.

“We’ve always believed that healing and self-expression are powerful tools in a young person’s journey,” Carla said. “RYSE youths not only developed new skills but also built confidence and connection.”

The Future of Arts Education in Hawai’i

Unfortunately, the future of arts education in Hawai’i is uncertain. Budget cuts and funding challenges are threatening the Museum Without Walls Arts Education Initiative, a grant program that has supported residencies like the one at RYSE Hawai’i. Elise von Dohlen, arts and culture program director at the Hawai’i Community Foundation, emphasized the importance of arts education in providing a safe space for healing and connection.

“There is an even greater need for arts education in communities across Hawai’i,” Elise said. “We must continue to prioritize this work and find ways to support it, even in the face of uncertainty.”

The art residency at RYSE Hawai’i is a powerful testament to the impact that creativity can have on individuals and communities. By providing a safe space for self-expression and creativity, Fatiha and her team were able to empower young people to share their stories and build connections with one another.

As we move forward in an uncertain world, it’s more important than ever to prioritize creativity and self-expression. By unlocking our creative potential, we can build confidence, connection, and a sense of purpose that will serve us well in the face of adversity.

Let’s continue to support innovative programs like the Museum Without Walls Arts Education Initiative and prioritize arts education in our communities. The future of creativity and change depends on it.
