Where Creativity Meets Community: The Magical World of Art + Flea
The Synergistic Convergence of Art and Community Platforms
In the heart of Honolulu, a creative revolution is taking place. Art + Flea, a twice-monthly marketplace, brings together some of the most talented makers and artists in the state, offering a unique opportunity for patrons to connect with the people behind the art. For over a decade, Art + Flea has been a beloved institution in the community, paving the way for other makers markets and fostering a sense of belonging among creatives.
A Space for Makers to Thrive
Capitol Modern, formerly the Hawai’i State Art Museum, is the perfect setting for Art + Flea. The beautiful, modern space is filled with natural light, making it a haven for artists and makers to showcase their creations. From illustrators and painters to vintage clothing collectors and woodworkers, the marketplace features a diverse range of creative endeavors. With over 13 years of experience selling his art at Art + Flea, Jeff Sanner, creative director of Hawaii Business Magazine, notes that the space is like “the Etsy marketplace, but with a local touch.” It’s a place where makers can connect with customers, share their stories, and build a community around their craft.
From Humble Beginnings to a Permanent Home
Art + Flea was founded in 2010 by Aly Ishikuni, who was joined by a group of passionate creatives. After years of success, Ishikuni opened the latest iteration of MORI, Art + Flea’s permanent store, inside Capitol Modern. MORI is a treasure trove of unique, handmade items, from jewelry and ceramics to textiles and artwork. Ishikuni’s vision was to create a space where customers could experience the art of making, and MORI has become a beloved destination for locals and visitors alike.
A Hub for Creativity and Community
Art + Flea is more than just a marketplace – it’s a community hub. The space is designed to encourage interaction and collaboration among makers, artists, and customers. With its regular events, workshops, and classes, Art + Flea provides a platform for learning and growth. Whether you’re a seasoned artist or just looking to explore your creative side, there’s always something happening at Art + Flea.
Sustainability and Support for Small Business Makers
As Sanner notes, Art + Flea has provided opportunities for hundreds of small business makers to showcase their goods in a brick-and-mortar setting. This not only benefits the makers but also supports the local economy. By shopping at Art + Flea, customers can feel good knowing that they’re supporting small businesses and contributing to the creative ecosystem of Hawaii.
A Look Inside the Market
