Aloha Friday Photo: A View of the USS Bowfin in Pearl Harbor

As we approach the anniversary of Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day on December 7th, we take a moment to reflect on the significance of this day and the sacrifices made by those who served.

The photo, shared by Bruce Campbell, shows the USS Bowfin, a historic attack submarine that played a crucial role in the Pacific Theater during World War II. But this is more than just a photo of a submarine – it’s a snapshot of a moment in time, a reminder of the events that shaped our country and the sacrifices made by those who served.

The USS Bowfin was nicknamed the “Pearl Harbor Avenger” and played a vital role in the war effort, conducting numerous patrols and attacks in the Pacific. Today, the submarine rests in Pearl Harbor and welcomes visitors for tours, offering a glimpse into its storied past.

Bruce’s photo was taken on May 23, 2022, as he and his wife stood at the Remembrance Circle near the USS Arizona anchor. As they gazed out at the harbor, they were overcome with emotion, moved by the events that took place on December 7, 1941. “What a price that was paid for the freedom we enjoy today,” Bruce wrote, his words conveying the depth of his gratitude and respect.

Visiting Pearl Harbor is a powerful experience that can evoke strong emotions. For many, it’s a chance to pay tribute to the sacrifices made by those who fought and died for our country. For others, it’s a reminder of the importance of preserving history and honoring those who came before us.

But we also think about the people who were directly affected by the events of December 7, 1941. We think about the families who lost loved ones, the survivors who were forever changed by the events of that day, and the city of Honolulu, which was forever marked by the attack.

As we approach Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day, we would like to take a moment to reflect on the significance of this day. We would like to honor the lives of those who were lost, the survivors who fought bravely, and the families who were forever changed by the events of that day.

We would also like to extend our gratitude to the people who have worked tirelessly to preserve the history of Pearl Harbor, to maintain the USS Bowfin and other historic vessels, and to share their stories with us.

Bruce’s photo is a powerful reminder of the importance of preserving our history and honoring those who came before us. It’s a reminder that even in the face of tragedy, there is always hope, always resilience, and always a chance to learn and grow.

As we move forward, let us continue to reflect on the significance of Pearl Harbor and the sacrifices made by those who served. Let us continue to honor their memories, to preserve their stories, and to pass on their legacy to future generations.

Mahalo to Bruce Campbell for sharing his photo and his story with us. We are grateful for his kindness and generosity, and for the opportunity to share his Aloha Friday Photo with all of you.
