Lanai is a small island with one town, two resorts and very few homes for sale. Almost all of the land has a single owner, which shapes everything about buying here.

Lanai at a glance
Larry Ellison bought about 98% of Lanai in 2012 for a reported $300 million. His company, Pulama Lanai, manages those holdings, is the island’s largest employer and owns about a third of its housing. In 2025 it shut down its luxury vacation-home building division and refocused on local projects, including Hokuao, a 76-unit affordable housing project that was the island’s first in nearly 30 years.
For buyers, that means the private resale market is tiny. Most months see zero to a couple of sales. In September 2026 there was one: a single-family home at $695,000.
Property taxes and rentals
Lanai is part of Maui County and uses the same property tax rates and $300,000 home exemption; see our Maui page for the full table. Vacation rental rules are the county’s, so confirm zoning and permits for any specific property with the Maui County Planning Department.
