Getting to Lanai in 2026: Ferry, Flights and Daily Life

Getting to and from Lanai is one of the first things buyers ask about. Right now there are two ways on and off the island, and both are changing.

The ferry

Expeditions runs a passenger ferry between Maalaea on Maui and Manele Harbor on Lanai, three round trips a day, about an hour and fifteen minutes each way. The company has said publicly that it needs to sell the business.

Maui County is planning to step in with a county-run ferry. As of September 2026, the county was aiming to put out a request for proposals in January 2027 and start county-contracted Lanai service around mid-2027. For buyers, the ferry should keep running, but check the schedule and fares when you plan.

Flights

  • Mokulele Airlines flies to Lanai under the federal Essential Air Service program. A new four-year contract through 2030 has been reported, with regular flights to Honolulu and Kahului.
  • Lanai Air, owned by Pulama Lanai, also flies to Lanai, and in August 2026 it added a Molokai-Honolulu route.
  • Hawaiian Airlines hasn’t served Lanai since 2021.

Small planes mean limits on baggage weight, and weather cancellations happen. If you’ll commute or travel often, plan around that.

Health care, school and shopping

  • Hospital: Lanai Community Hospital, run by Maui Health, is a small critical access hospital with limited 24-hour emergency care. Serious cases fly to Maui or Oahu.
  • School: Lanai High & Elementary is the island’s one public school, kindergarten through 12th grade.
  • Groceries: Pine Isle Market and Richard’s Market, both in Lanai City. Prices are higher than on Maui, and a lot of residents stock up on trips off-island.

What it means for buyers

Lanai suits people who like a small town and don’t mind planning ahead. If you’ll be flying in and out a lot, or need regular specialist care, factor those trips into your cost of living. If you mostly want to stay put, it’s one of the most peaceful places in Hawaii to own a home.
